Description

Our cotton linen prayer flags are handmade and blessed by Tibetan Buddhist nuns living in India. All proceeds from the sale of them helps to provide food, shelter and education for the nuns.

According to Traditional Tibetan medicine, health and harmony are produced through the balance of the five elements.

  • Blue symbolizes the sky and space.
  • White symbolizes the air and wind.
  • Red symbolizes fire.
  • Green symbolizes water.
  • Yellow symbolizes earth.

The symbols and mantras on prayer flags are sacred, therefore prayer flags should be treated with respect. They should not be placed on the ground. Old prayer flags should be burned. See our blog post on how to hang and dispose of old prayer flags.

There are 3 sizes: small, medium and large.  The approximate length of each (including the string on either side) is: 63″ (small), 69″ (medium) and 74″ (large).

Each flag is 7 x 8 ½ inches (18 cm x 21.5 cm); set of 5 flags is approximately 39 inches long (114 cm) from the beginning of the first flag to outside edge of last. The string is longer.
Medium

Each flag is 8 x 11.5 inches (20 cm x 29 cm); the set of 5 flags is approximately 44 inches long (112 cm) from the beginning of the first flag to outside edge of last. The string is longer.
Large

Each flag is 10 x 14 inches (25 cm x 35.5 cm); the set of 5 is 56 inches long (142 cm) from the beginning of the first flag to outside edge of last. The string is longer.
Guru Rinpoche

Padmasambhava, the renowned saint of the eighth century, was a central figure in shaping Buddhism’s history in Tibet. Revered as the second Buddha, Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru) conquered the local deities and demons of Tibet and bound them by oath to become guardians of Buddhism.
Gyaltsen Tsenpo

This is a common prayer flag, especially at New Year, symbolizing new ventures and beginnings. Gyaltsen Tsenpo prayer flags are printed with sutras bestowed by Lord Buddha to Indra, king of the gods to overcome his enemies and achieve victory.
Tara

Representing virtuous and enlightened action, it is said that Tara's compassion for living beings is stronger than a mother’s love for her children. She also brings about longevity, protects earthly travel, and guards her followers on their spiritual journey to enlightenment.
Windhorse

These prayer flags are the most common prayer flags and are our best-selling ones. The center of each prayer flag features the traditional strong horse (lungta) bearing three flaming jewels on its back. The horse is a symbol of speed and the transformation of bad fortune to good fortune. The three flaming jewels symbolize the Buddha, the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and the Sangha (Buddhist community): the three cornerstones of Tibetan philosophical tradition.
